DESCRIPTION Chloroquine Phosphate, USP, is a 4-aminoquinoline compound for oral administration. It is a white, odorless, bitter tasting, crystalline substance, freely soluble in water. Chloroquine Phosphate Tablets are an antimalarial and amebicidal drug. Chloroquine is a medication used to prevent and to treat malaria in areas where malaria is known to be sensitive to its effects. Certain types of malaria, resistant strains, and complicated cases typically require different or additional medication. It is also occasionally used for amebiasis that is occurring outside the intestines, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus erythematosus. It is taken by mouth. Common side effects include muscle problems, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and skin rash. Serious Chloroquine phosphate may be used as a pharmaceutical reference standard for the determination of the analyte in pharmaceutical formulations by thin-layer chromatography TLC and liquid chromatography LC. These Secondary Standards are qualified as Certified Reference Materials.
