Hydroxychloroquine is sold under several brand names, including Plaquenil®. For more information on rheumatoid arthritis or lupus in pregnancy please see. The medication is generally well-tolerated, and has even been found safe overall for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. How is This Medication Given? Generally, hydroxychloroquine is given in 200 mg or 400 mg doses, once per day. Higher doses can sometimes be used, but only in adults and not for all cases. Hydroxychloroquine is recommended for safe and successful pregnancies if you have lupus. It has been shown to be safe for the mother and baby during pregnancy and breast feeding. It can reduce the risk of complications during the pregnancy which is why it is recommended.

Hydroxychloroquine is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, and steady-state concentrations are reached after 4–6 weeks; 45% of hydroxychloroquine binds to plasma proteins that are deposited in tissues such as the liver, spleen, kidney, and lung.
