Many systemic medications may cause retinal toxicity. One such commonly used medication for dermatologic and rheumatologic inflammatory conditions is hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil, a chloroquine derivative. It is used to treat many diseases including malaria, rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Note This document contains side effect information about hydroxychloroquine. Some of the dosage forms listed on this page may not apply to the brand name Plaquenil. For the Consumer. Applies to hydroxychloroquine oral tablet. Along with its needed effects, hydroxychloroquine the active ingredient contained in Plaquenil may cause some unwanted effects. The early signs of hydroxychloroquine toxicity are macular edema and/or bilateral granular depigmentation of the RPE in the macula. With continued exposure to the drug, this can progress to an atrophic bullseye maculopathy with concentric rings of hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation surrounding the fovea. As mentioned above, these findings may be in the peripheral macula near the arcades in patients of Asian descent.

Both medications have been shown to bind melanin and to concentrate in the iris, ciliary body and retinal pigment epithelium, altering normal physiologic function. Chloroquine (Aralen) and hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) are traditional antimalarial agents now used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Aug 29, 2014 Retinal toxicity of Plaquenil may manifest itself with subtle disturbances of the retinal pigment epithelium which may eventually lead to complete destruction of the macula in the form of bull’s-eye maculopathy. Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial medication used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites, which enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Plaquenil is also used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. The aim of this study is to report a rare case of macular edema as a presentation of hydroxychloroquine-related retinal toxicity. We presented a case of a 46-year-old female patient using hydroxychloroquine for underlying rheumatoid arthritis RA with blurred vision over the left eye.

Itching bad with plaquenil - Scleroderma - Inspire Hi - I sometimes go through spells of severe itching but I'm not sure it is related to Plaquenil so maybe yours is different. Planquenil is causing some other gastro problems for me but like you, it has worked wonderfully on my joint pain so I am hesitant to give it up.
